Supporting of Characters
In the book The One and Only Ivan, the elephant Stella clearly is a main supporting character. Before she is thrown into the rubbish bin with the forklift, she does everything to protect and keep company with Ruby. Additionally, Stella will do anything to keep Ruby happy, as she does not want her to go through the same experience as her. This character clearly has an unheard voice in this story as when Mack and his team through out the elephant, they don't even consider Stella's thoughts and actions towards the date.
Parellel Writing
The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate clearly depicts a main character (the gorilla Ivan) that wants his voice to be heard in the world. When Ivan drew a picture for Ruby, he was trying to communicate to the humans to give then a new home in the zoo. This clearly illustrates that Ivan wants to be, not just like the humans, but to be able to communicate to them and to tell them his wish for Ruby. Ivan's situation is extremely similar to the character Melody in the book Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper. Melody desperately wanted to talk and express her ideas to others so she could fit into the group. Both Ivan and Melody realized eventually that they could, in the end, find a way to express themselves, either by the voice machine or the pictures that Ivan drew for Ruby.
