What I Learnt From Nutrition Unit

What I learnt about fats is that there are many different types of unhealthy and healthy fats. One type of good fat is monounsaturated fat, and polyunsaturated fats, which are beneficial to your body. However, there are also a lot of bad fats which are trans-fat, and saturated fats.

What I have learned about sugar is that there is more than you expect in all foods. In Mountain Dew, there are 16 teaspoons of sugar, which means that you are taking your whole day’s dose of sugar in one hit. Sugar also gives you a high, which causes you to feel happy and full of energy, but when it goes past a certain point, you get a low and become tired. I also learnt that sugar comes from carbs too.

I think my snack was healthy as it had no sugar and low salt, and very low oil, and the oil that I used was olive oil. In addition, the filling (which was moroccan beef mince by the way) had barely any oil and had quite a bit of vegetables in it.

When I choose a snack I sometimes think about how healthy/unhealthy it is, but it actually rarely comes to my mind. For example, when I am drinking a soft drink or a bag of Doritos, I sometimes think about it if I eat too much, but if it is just once in a while I never think about it.

I think food is meant to be eaten with other people as when you eat you can have time to talk and socialise with other people. Usually, people get really busy on the weekdays, and if families always have dinner together, it is probably the only times during the week that they can talk.

Math "Height of A Building"

Today, we worked mainly on how to roughly estimate the height of a tall light post, and we did that by using a shadow. By looking at the shadow and the "triangle" the pole made, and comparing it to a ruler as an equivalent, we could divide the shadow of the pole by the shadow of the 1 meter ruler to get the answer, which was 25 meters, while our group got  30.82 meters. As the ratio of the shadow of the pole to the pole is 22.5 : X, and the ruler was 0.73 : 1 meter, if you divided 22.5 by 0.73, you would get the approximate length of the pole. However, as we took the measurements five minutes apart, and the sun wasn't in a perfect position to measure the best, we did not get very close to the heigh of the pole, which was actually 25 meters.

Day 1 and 2 --- Earthquake Proof Building Project

Hey guys, so we've started building an earthquake
proof building (project for school again), and
we got the base done -- it took a while, had some problems,
but it was worth it :). Base works really well, and we'll post the blueprints next time.

Earthquake-proof Buildings

These buildings are less solid than a short 3 story apartment building, and can sway and move in an earthquake, whereas a 3 story building would be stiff and fall over when the bottom is shifting.

Aiden's Wellness/Fitness Blog Post 2014

3A. My wellness wheel would run pretty smoothly, but the psychological wheel would trip it up.
3B. I am most well in the physical section, as I really exercise a lot and do many things.
3C.I am the least well in psychological, as, as I don't really do the best I can sometimes.
3D. I would want to make my Physical wellness better and get it to a five, by getting more sleep every night.

These five benefits of exercise caught my attention:
  • Makes body more agile.
  • Enhances immune system.
  • Strengthens the heart.
  • Improves posture.
  • Enhances quality of sleep.
One benefit I want to improve on is to enhance my quality of sleep, as I usually get tired during the day. In my opinion, I think that I am not getting enough exercise, but it is better than before, where I didn't do anything at all. If I need to make some changes, it would be to get more exercise, and I would do that by doing an intramural after school. I will also maintain it by doing it every week.Exercise helps you maintain physical, emotional, and spiritual wellness.

Investigation 1 Blog Post

I have found that changing a percentage to a ratio has made a lot of ads seem much clearer if there is a large difference or the huge percentage difference. As there could have been just 3 people voting, and if one person says no and two people say yes, it is automatically a 50% difference, but there is not much difference in the number of people.

Part to part ratios are ratios which compare one part to another part, whilst part to whole ratios compare the whole thing to one part.

You can scale or use equivalent ratios to solve a proportion by making both a fraction, then making the denominators equal to compare them properly.

You can scale or use equivalent ratios to find out if 9/11 of a packet or 6/7ths of a packet is more, and choose the one that is more.

What moves the plates?

The core of the earth under the lava is so hot, that it makes the magma under the crust move, which causes it to move in a pattern called a convection cell, which basically is a pattern where the magma rises, cools, and goes back into the mantle. The path that it is moving in is called a convection current, and depending on which way it rotates, (anti-clockwise or clockwise), the plates will move in that direction. The crust then spreads in two different directions: apart from each other, and directs outwards. The old segments of the crust will then end up under the earth, heated up by magma,  and the new rock will be formed at the top.

Basketball

I demonstrated a pass, pivot, and a spin during the video, for example when I was in trouble from Thomas, I quickly passed to Ben, and he tried to shoot the ball. An example of a pivot is when he was walking up to defend me, and I spun, around, pivoted, but then got the ball stolen off me.

I can improve my accompanying and evading movements by making sure to pass better, and also to do more cut-fakes, as I didn't do many of them.

Unit 1 Reflection

1. The common properties of all polygons are they all have at least three sides, and have at least 180 degrees. Also, the sides do not cross each other. Exactly two sides meet at every vertex.
2.The measure in degrees tells you if it is an acute, obtuse, straight, reflex, or right angle. Some common benchmark angles are the ones that are divisible by 30°, 45°, or 90°. Examples are 120°, or even 315°.
3. To estimate angle measure, one strategy is to draw a midpoint on the middle of the angle. Then, use a compass to draw a circle around it. Afterwards, you can draw in the "benchmark angles", and then estimate from there. Or, you could just do an estimate by drawing it in your head. To find accurate measurements with tools, put the centre of the bottom line of the protractor on the part where the two angles touch, make sure the angle line on the bottom is aligned with the bottom line on the protractor, and measure.

Learning Behaviors

Two things that I am good at are arriving to class prepared with resources, materials, and assignments consistently, and completing my homework to the best of my ability every day. A weakness that I have is to arrive on class late as once or twice I forget to check the time and am late to class. All I think I need to do is to keep on doing the same thing and to remember to check my watch at lunch.

Google Science Fair

In the google science fair, I think the "wearable sensors" for tracking the movements and wanderings of Alzheimer's patients by Kenneth Shinozuka is the most efficient and one that would effect our society the most for three reasons. The first is that is is easy and cheap to create, as it does not use many materials for the sensors. Another important reason is that it would save a lot of Alzheimer's patients from wandering off and getting into an accident at night. Finally, I think that one last reason this should be voted as the best "Google Science Project" is that the the sensor is lightweight and easy to use, and finally that it will relieve a lot of stress for the caretakers of people with Alzheimer's.

Financial Report -- Investments for Profits and Bros

Financial Report of Profit and Bros        Screen Shot 2014-05-22 at 8.43.41 pm.png
By Aiden and Aditya

Mr. Hardinge invested “$10,000” into our portfolios of 5 companies on 5/12/2013, They were American Express (AXP), Google (GOOG), Apple (AAPL), Toyota (TYO:6201), and Tigers Polymer Company (TYO:4231). This portfolio performed in positive profit territory for nearly the entire period, apart from early February and early May.
The average profit was $388.43 (average of each update)or a 3.88% of the portfolio starting value.

The initial period from 5/12/2014 to 25/1/2014 saw a gradual rise in profit, reaching a peak of $1,094.68 (10.94% increase).
Screen Shot 2014-05-22 at 7.01.32 pm.pngA rapid fall in share prices from 25/1/2014 to 4/2/2014 saw the portfolio record a loss of $227.32 (-2.27%). The period from 4/2/2014 to 22/5/2014 saw a gradual rise and decline, leaving us with a profit of $435.24 (4.35%).

In the table below, you can see the beginning and current prices of our portfolio shares for our companies, and the highest and lowest price. Additionally, the range shows the growth of the company between the start and the end. Also, from the graph above, you can see the trend was mostly a profit, with very little loss.

“Investing” in our company was a good idea at the start, as we made a lot of profit, and since it is rising again, I would advise you to continue investing in our shares.Screen Shot 2014-05-22 at 8.31.45 pm.pngScreen Shot 2014-05-22 at 6.33.20 pm.png

Elodia and Saltwater

First of all, when I zoomed in, the cell membrane and the chemicals inside filled the cell. When I placed the saltwater next to the cover slip, I put the paper towel on the other side of the cover slip. Freshwater went out, and saltwater slowly went into the gaps. It retracts and white spots start to form. More water diffuses out of the elodea cells than the amount that diffuses in. Therefore, the inside of the elodea cells loses water, the cell contents shrink, and the plasma membranes pull away from the cell walls. As you can see in the last 7 seconds of the short clip, the place where the saltwater had affected the cells the most had cells that had turned into small balls. The process is called plasmolysis. However, the outer boundary of the cell did not collapse because of osmotic pressure, which is the pressure which needs to be applied a liquid before a cell wall or membrane collapses. Finally, when the freshwater was placed back in, the cells exploded, as the change of pressure was too rapid and fast for the cells to deal with, therefore resulting in chloroplast streaming, and the cell walls breaking.

1. What happens to the cells as the salt water flows under the cover slip?
It retracts and white spots start to form.

2. Why does this happen?
It happens as the salt water is depriving the cells of water and the cell is becoming dehydrated.

3. Why didn’t the outer boundary of the cell collapse?
The outer boundary of the cell did not collapse as the cell wall held it together.

4. Why do plants wilt when there is not enough water
When water in the plant is drawn out by osmotic pressure, the plant will wilt. Plants normally wilt without water because water normally helps in the transportation of nutrients and other important minerals from the soil to the plants. Then, the plant might not be able to photosynthesise or gain the minerals that it needs.

Coldest and Hottest Places on Earth

Vostok Station in Antarctica is one of the coldest places on Earth. The Russian research station is where the lowest recorded temperature was taken at -89.2 degrees Celsius (-128.56 Fahrenheit). Antarctica is not only the coldest place but also the windiest and has the highest overall elevation of any continent in the world. Despite the fact that Antarctica contains 90 percent of the ice in the world, it receives almost no rainfall, making it technically a desert. The absolute value of this temperature is 89.2 degrees Celsius.

Al’Aziziyah, located in Northwest Libya, is one of the hottest habitable places on Earth. On Sept. 13, 1922, a high temperature of 57.8 degrees Celsius (136.04 Fahrenheit) was recorded in Al’Aziziyah. Later, experts discounted the reading, mainly because they said the person who took it was untrained, but the area is still considered one of the hottest in the world. The absolute value of this temperature is the same, 57.8 degrees Celsius.

Mythology 2.0 Reflection

Ok. Everyone nowadays uses electronics and computers, but how about the Greeks? What would they do with computers and electronics? Well, that is what we are trying to find out. If they had technology and used 21st century talk, what they do, say, and how would they use it? Now, using Fakebook, we have found the answer.

I tried this software that imitates Facebook, and hand picked one of my favourite myths: Jason and the Golden Fleece. It is a story that is about the Argonauts, a group of talented people, lead by Jason, going to search for the Golden Fleece. I chose the Fakebook page to be from Jason’s perspective as he was the main character and the leader of the Argonauts. I also chose Jason because most of the turning points in the story affect and change him, and his personal feelings can be put on the page. The Fakebook page shows how he progresses through the times and changes.

I think that the story made me realize how brave and courageous Jason is in the story, and an in-depth idea of how the main characters felt throughout the story. I also used the features of Fakebook to show what Jason would feel and do with technology. I thought that I learnt a lot about the main character through this way of learning, and I hope you will too by reading my Fakebook!

The SugarPact

As a part of our ratio unit we investigated the ratio of sugar in a variety of sodas. We were pretty alarmed at how high the sugar content was so we investigated some of the harmful effects of consuming too much sugar. This lead to us working in teams to create a math based video that presents a recommendation of what the government could do in order to reduce soda consumption in Singapore.

What I learned from the video is how much soda impacts us, and how important it is to regulate the amount you sugar you eat and consume in a day. I also learned in a group that collaboration and teamwork is really important as you can't really get work done if you don't collaborate and work well. The most enjoyable thing that I did in this project was the filming, as I could have a laugh and make some jokes in the filming process. Learning and applying math through these type of projects is very useful as it is memorable and a great experience.

Global Water Crisis

A video on protists.

Three important facts that I saw about the water crisis is:
  1. Changes in food habits may reduce the problem, as different types of food use up more water than others.
  2. 3900 children die every day from water borne diseases.
  3. 1.1 billion people live without clean drinking water.
I saw from today's samples under the microscope that how many protists could be in a drop of water, and how contaminated water would be in other countries that have to drink from unclear water. In the above fact you can see how sick these protists make humans!

Controlling a Disease

If I was the director of the health department of Singapore, and was trying to stop the spread of an extremely infectious disease, I would recommend for people who are infected to stay away from all family members and not to interact with others, unless they are also sick with the disease. For people who do not wish to get the disease, I would recommend to stay and home and refrain from going to places where many people go to.
The trade-offs for my recommendations are staying away from others for not being infected or not catching the disease. Also, it would be trading off not getting infected for going to fun places like Universal Studios or Sentosa.

My Plate Lunch

This is the my plate lunch presentation with a list of all the healthy lunches we have.

Nutrition Goal

My nutrition goal is to drink at least 8 cups of water a day because I drink next to nothing and feel lethargic sometimes, so drinking water is key to my health.

Why Breakfast?

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day because as you have not eaten any food for 12 hours, your body needs nutrition and a good boost for the day. Breakfast is the only meal that you have to start off your day, so eating a healthy and full meal will make your mood, hand-eye co-ordination, and attentiveness improve. A good breakfast that everyone should have contains all the parts of the "My Plate", which are grains, fruits, vegetables, protein, and finally dairy. If you have a healthy breakfast, your day will improve, and you will have the energy to get through to lunch. Therefore, breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

The Most Accurate Way to Find pH

The most accurate way to measure pH is to use the pH meter. However, it was one of the methods that had some anomalies to the official pH for the substance. I chose it because if you get rid of the water on the probe, the probe would be very accurate, but I think the probe and substance was polluted from different classes and the water, so the pH with the probe was a little higher, never lower, than normal. The method that had the most difference was the universal indicator, and the one that had differences was the pH strips that also had a lot of anomalies.
The results I found on the internet were not all similar to the probe, but if the probes were washed, dried with a paper towel, and vacuumed, the results would have been much more accurate.

The Facts

Pooh Bear is for babies - everyone's opinion.
This IS a fact. Pooh Bear spirit never dies.

Some funny and meaningful Winnie the Pooh quotes:
“How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.”
“It is more fun to talk with someone who doesn't use long, difficult words but rather short, easy words like "What about lunch?”
"Rivers know this: there is no hurry. We shall get there some day.”
“Some people talk to animals. Not many listen though. That's the problem.”
